EAA Inprocess Inspection and Wing Skins - Section 17

Had my first in-process inspection performed this morning before I started to attach the wing skins. We filled out the required form and Jim Smith, my EAA technical counselor will mail one of the copies to the EAA, he will keep a copy and I have a copy for my build log. Good idea to have that second set of eyes.

Spent a bit of time on the internet looking at the other build logs to ensure all goes well with the installation of the wing skins. Found an entry on Jerry Greenberg's website that saved me a question in the future. On page 17-02, step 2, the plans indicate that the W-1201-L wing skin is to be dimpled in two places. The plans are technically correct but would be much clearer if the plans had stated to dimple 2 holes in one of the places and a single hole in the other place. This can be verified by looking at the installation of the left wing walk doubler, Page 17-04, step 2. Here the plans are very clear in that plans tell you to dimple the three inboard holes in the W-1201C-L wing walk doubler.

Removed all of my fingerprints from the ribs and interior structure using a Dawn liquid detergent solution (the Dawn solution removed fingerprints and oils very well). Then primed all of the mating flanges on the left and right wing ribs using the SW wash primer. Remember, I am only priming the mating surfaces. Applying the primer with a small throw away foam brush after cleaning the surface with acetone.

Then on to the preparation and installation of the W-1201-L wing skin. Removed all of the machine marks from the skin edge, removed the burr, rounded the four sharp corners and then cleco'ed the skin to the wing structure. EVERYTHING, aligned perfectly. The engineering of this kit is truely amazing. Will start the riveting process on Sunday.
