Completed Spar Assembly - Section 13

Today, I completed the spar assembly section in the plans. Learned how to mix and use Sherwin Williams P60-G2 primer. I am only priming the mating surfaces as suggested by Jim Cone. Cleaned the surfaces I intended to prime using Acetone, then applied the primer to each mating surface with a small throw away foam brush. After priming and allowing to dry, attached the angles, built yesterday to the spar with the pneumatic rivet puller. The riveter, purchased from Avery, worked very well. Used a small wedge to reach the tight spaces as shown on the EAA web site videos.

Started Spar Assembly - Section 13

Started the assembly process today. Twenty attach angles were constructed by cutting them from the 4 pieces of supplied angle. Two attach angles were constructed by cutting them from the 1 piece of supplied angle. Cut/separated with the bandsaw. Excess material removed with the disc sander. All edges polished with a file, sandpaper and with the small scrotchbrite wheel in an air die grinder. The small Scothbrite wheel made short work of rounding all of the corners and polishing the pieces. There is a small hump every 2.75 inches on the edge of the angles that should be removed. Most probably resulted during the machining process at Van's. Match drilled the rib doubler to the spar. Then, tapped the AEX wing tie downs in the spars after drilling to the correct size. Before starting, decided to make a small wooden jig to hold the spar in the vertical position. See the pictures.

Where Did I Store Some of the Parts

Before the wing kit arrived a built a 4 foot by about 10 foot shelf above the garage door. All of the wing skins and the larger wing kit parts are stored there until I need them. The remainder of the parts are stored on the shelf under the work bench.

Wing Kit Arrived Today!!

The wing kit for the RV-12 arrived today, August 28 at about noon. Two large wooden boxes. Had no problem getting them off of the truck with the help of the driver. Used a dolly to move them into the garage. Spent the afternoon removing the contents and inventorying all of the parts against the shipping list. All parts were accounted for and there was absolutely no damage to any of the parts. Spent the remainder of the afternoon demolishing the shipping boxes and the packing material. Can't wait to get started.
