Finally, Back to HS Assembly
With all of the relatives gone, it was time to get back to the horizontal stabilizer. Yesterday, Monday, January 5 I spent about 4 hours doing the usual. Deburring, cleaning all of the edges on the remainder of the parts required for assembly of the horizontal stabilizer.
Today, I primed all of the mating edges using pre-mixed Marhyde primer in a 1 quart can. Applied the primer using a throw away foam brush. It is OK but I think I prefer the Sherwin Williams primer, P60-G2. The fumes from the Marhyde were really no better than the SW primer. Had to open the garage door to let the fumes subside. Wish I had a small priming booth, anyone, ideas?
Assembled the spar box assembly for the HS without any problems. Pay attention to the plans. The parts are NOT symmetrical.
Fitted the upper and lower HS stab horns to the spar assembly. And then, fitted the counterbalance brackets to the counter balance arms. Used a small level to ensure alignment.
Then squeezed all of the many, many, many nutplates to the forward and aft HS spar. Had to drill out one of the nutplate rivets using a #41 drill. It was not up to my standards. Six hours today. Will start with step 7, on page 9-04 on Wednesday.
